On 26 October 2011 Aphaia participated at Telcoms IQ’s Delivering High Speed Broadband Conference that took place in Prague, Czech Republic. The conference was endorsed by FTTH Council Europe, an industry organisation with a mission to accelerate the availability of fibre-based, ultra-high-speed access networks to consumers and businesses.
As the number of fibre optic network subscribers in Europe is rapidly increasing thanks to a booming broadband market in Eastern Europe, the conference brought together telecoms and cable operators from across Europe, showcasing successful operator case studies of deployment strategies that can keep up with the ever increasing customer demand for high speed broadband.
At the conference Aphaia’s Chief Consultant Boštjan Makarovič presented an overview of how a Slovene alternative telecoms operator went about achieving the balance between infrastructure and regulated service competition when deploying its FTTH (‘Fibre to the Home’) network.
Mr Makarovič compared business models and market experiences of new entrants and an incumbent superfast broadband provider, as well as having examined how far parallel commercial roll outs of superfast broadband infrastructure lay the foundation for effective competition and how to effectively complement NGA rollout with wholesale local access regulatory remedies. Mr. Makarovič also spoke of the limitations of NGA reach and the reconciliation of competition with public funding in order to achieve ubiquitous superfast broadband coverage.
