Aphaia participates in FOAN 2023

Aphaia’s Partner Cristina Contero Almagro delivered a presentation on NIS 2 Directive at FOAN 2023, which was held in Ghent on 30th and 31st October.

The 11th International Workshop on Fiber Optics in Access Networks (FOAN) took place in Ghent on 30th-31st October, in conjunction with the International Congress on Ultra Modern Telecommunications and Control Systems (ICUMT).

The agenda and the topics

FOAN 2023 gathered scientists and experts from academia, industry and operators from multiple countries, including US, Taiwan, Japan, China, Czech Republic, Slovenia and Serbia, among many others.

The two-day event allowed attendants to learn from the insights presented by the speakers and exchange their thoughts and research in the field of fiber optics technologies aimed to end-users, including individuals and businesses. The first day was focused on sensors and sensor networks, whereas the second day was dedicated to optical and access networks.

FOAN 2023 was the 11th edition, after the successful ones in Moscow (2010), Budapest (2011), St. Petersburg (2012), Almaty (2013), Brno (2015), Lisbon (2016), Munich (2017), Sarajevo (2019), Ljubljana (2021) and Valencia (2022).

Aphaia’s participation

Aphaia was invited to deliver a talk on the impact of the revised Network and Information Security Directive (NIS 2 Directive) on electronic communications networks providers.

Aphaia’s presentation offered an overview of the NIS 2 Directive and the requirements applicable to providers of public electronic communications networks and publicly available electronic communications services, in particular cybersecurity risk management and reporting obligations.

Providers of public electronic communications networks and publicly available electronic communications services are considered essential entities according to the NIS 2 Directive, which determines the measures that they need to apply and the enforcement regime they are subject to. They will also be subject to special rules, for example, they fall under the jurisdiction of the Member State in which they provide their services, contrary to the general NIS 2 Directive rule whereby entities would be regulated by the jurisdiction of the Member State where they are based.

Entities falling under the scope of NIS 2 Directive will also need to consider how these obligations may overlap with their obligations under other laws and regulations, such as the GDPR in terms of technical and organisational measures and personal data breach reporting and notification.

Social events

Together with the presentations and technical talks, participants enjoyed a number of social events which allowed them to continue the discussion in a more relaxed context.
