World Water Day 2013: international year of water cooperation

Today, Friday, 22 March we celebrate the annual World Water Day. This year the day is dedicated to the theme of cooperation around water.

Created by the United Nations in 1993, World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater. This year, in celebration of 2013, the International Year of Water Cooperation, the day is dedicated to cooperation around water.

Rapid urbanization, pollution and climate change threaten water resources, while demands for water are increasing in order to satisfy the needs of a growing world population. Good management of water is especially challenging, as it is a shared resource, with a wide variety of conflicting interests. Water cooperation across political boundaries is therefore crucial to peace and sustainable development.

Highlighting this importance will be events celebrating water cooperation and the 2013 World Water Day that will be taking place around the globe. Among them are the World Water Day celebrations and High Level Forum in the Hague, Netherlands, and a high-level interactive dialogue about water-related challenges at the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
